FRAGILE GOODS / MATERIALS LAB

Crumple Crate

Build the cushion. Watch the impact. Bring the parcel home intact.

Choose four cushioning layers, from wall to parcel.

Run an impact trial. Keep shock, compression, remaining speed and cost below the four limits. Soft layers cushion the blow; damping controls the bounce. Order matters.

DESIGN / READY
Start with a mix of materials. Run a trial to see what needs improving.

Peak shock is the maximum parcel acceleration during the four-second trial. Compression is the deepest shortening of any layer. Remaining speed is the parcel speed at four seconds, indicating uncontrolled rebound. All four limits must pass. Use the plot to distinguish a sharp initial shock from a slow rebound.

The bench is an illustrative one-dimensional spring–damper chain. Layers can extend as well as compress; separators have mass. It does not model crushing, real packaging dimensions, damage or certified material properties. The body integration and all spring forces use the complete locally bundled cannon-es 0.20.0 runtime (MIT); original missions and interface, GPT-generated material textures.
